Description

My parents, Haim and Eugenia Pardo, decided to escape from the ghetto, together with their three children aged five, ten and fourteen. The risk is great, if they arrested us they would execute us, both us and those who helped us. And even then we didn't know that the ultimate goal of the Nazis was to kill us in Poland. We hid in Thessaloniki in a house of our Christian fellow citizens, in the heart of the city, near the German headquarters, protected by an Austrian... In our hiding place we imprisoned ourselves and our prison lasted a year and a half, 18 whole months, 548 endless days from April of 1943 to October 1944. From the very first days I started writing a diary under the pseudonym Roula Karacotsou. My real name is nowhere mentioned in this children's text. We were afraid to even say our names. There are two ways to understand "History". By describing events and by describing everyday life. This book, therefore, conveys the whole climate of the era of the persecution of the Jews of Thessaloniki in an excellent way. And with the eyes of the young "Roulas Karakotsou" at the time, but also with the eyes, after seventy-seven years, of Rozina Asser Pardo.
